Young achiever

Simon Cassidy

Golden Jubilee National Hospital

“Simon is a valued and respected member of the team who works well with people at every level of the organisation. Driven and passionate yet easy going and approachable he is a safe pair of hands who can be relied upon to do any job to the best of his ability. He embodies the NHS values of can do attitude and going the extra mile, often working in his own time to research projects, achieving excellent results.”

Sam Laurie (winner)

NHS Borders

“Sam is a young lady who joined the Communications team in August 2015 having previously worked in finance.  She beat off very strong competition for the role of Communications Assistant rising to the cream of the crop of internal and external applicants – many of whom, on paper, had more extensive ‘communications experience’. She is committed to supporting the work of the organisation, shows dedication and commitment to furthering herself and the organisation and carries out her work in line with NHS Borders values demonstrating person centredness, openness, honesty and responsibility.”

Gemma Cornall

NHS Education for Scotland

“Since Gemma joined us she has excelled in every area and risen to every challenge. She has developed creative and technical skills that a time-served graphic designer would be proud of and acquired additional skills in film production and editing, establishing an in-house film production service that is in huge demand. In addition to becoming an integral member of the Communications team and an asset to NES, Gemma has carved out a role as an ambassador for modern apprenticeships, making herself available to promote the NHS as an employer and MAs as a rewarding career pathway for young people.”

Lindsay Hathaway

NHS Forth Valley

“Lindsay has an excellent grasp of the value of good communication and has revolutionised the way we use social media.  She works hard to find the best ways to spread health messages and creates eye-catching posts. Her writing skills are first class.  She has an eye for a story and comes up with good design ideas which she then puts into practice.  She is a keen photographer and has developed strong working relationships with staff across the organisation. She is always willing to lend a hand and is great at coming up with new ideas and solutions.”

Calum Farquharson

NHS 24

“Calum joined NHS 24 via the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme in August 2015 with little or no experience of multimedia production. His determination to learn and produce content of professional standards has been a key driver in securing a permanent position within the comms team. The technical quality of his work is outstanding and his creativity is increasing as his confidence grows. Calum produces exceptionally good work in whatever format is requested and NHS 24’s social media channels have been greatly enhanced by his output. Our audience engagement has significantly increased which is testament to Calum’s hard work.

Communicator of the year

Andrew Reid

NHS National Services Scotland

“Andrew interrogates a wide variety of complex data sources to inform his Direct Marketing decisions and keep the blood supply at safe levels. On a daily basis he considers (a) Current blood stock levels for all eight blood groups (b) Demand, as the demand for blood is unpredictable and can change rapidly eg, major incident, (c) Opportunity to donate, as the collection programme is planned 18 months in advance so Andrew can only target donors in certain parts of the country on any given day. Andrew internalises this information seamlessly, making rapid, safe and informed decisions in real time.”

Calvin Brown (winner)

NHS Lanarkshire

“Calvin has led communications on three major campaigns over the course of the last year which were huge individual pieces of work in their own right. To have successfully overseen all three makes him a special nominee. To have done this at a time when he also had to assume the role of head of communications after the person who held that post was forced to take sick leave, is all the more remarkable. Despite times over the past 12 months when he has been under pressure undertaking these tasks, he has remained calm and focused at all times.”

Linda Brownlie

NHS Lanarkshire

“Despite an ongoing increase in the volume and complexity of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, Linda has continued to maintain performance in meeting the statutory requirements of the act. Linda has simultaneously trained members of the communications team and other colleagues throughout the organisation about the requirements of the act. She has also put in place protocols and new ways of working to ensure we continue to meet our Board's target and the statutory deadline. Linda is an important and integral part of our communications team - providing information and advice on a daily basis.”
